Interoperability is essential for a European launch ecosystem where operators, launch providers and payload actors can work across different spaceports without unnecessary technical or regulatory friction. It concerns the compatibility of infrastructure, vehicles, payloads, ground support equipment, communication systems and operational procedures.

Why it matters

Launch providers increasingly need access to multiple spaceports depending on mission type, orbit, launch window, infrastructure availability and commercial conditions. When technical interfaces, operational requirements or regulatory expectations differ too much between sites, each launch campaign becomes slower, more expensive and harder to scale. Better interoperability can help reduce duplication, support multi-spaceport operations and make European spaceports more attractive for industry.

What AEAAS is looking at

AEAAS examines how common regulatory practices can support interoperability between spaceports, launch vehicles, payloads and ground systems. The project looks at interface requirements, payload integration, ground equipment compatibility, communication links, operational readiness and the role of standards or mutually recognised practices.

Key questions for stakeholders

  • Which technical interfaces should be easier to use across different European spaceports?
  • Where do current spaceport-specific requirements create duplication or additional cost?
  • What information should be portable from one launch site to another?
  • How can payload integration and ground support procedures be made more predictable?
  • Which standards or practices could support safe interoperability without becoming overly prescriptive?

Stakeholder input

AEAAS invites stakeholders to share practical experience on technical compatibility, payload integration, ground support systems and multi-spaceport operations. This input will help identify where common approaches can improve efficiency while preserving safety, security and operational reliability.
